I’m a sucker for a sappy love story. Like the kind that brings a person to tears. The heartbreaking, chaotic, consuming kind of love that is portrayed on the big screen, or in the pages of a bestseller. The kind I spent most of my vacation reading. As my husband sat next to me, letting me know that I was one big, fat, sucker!
As I explain to him the plot of my third book for the week, he tells me, “You know that stuff is fake. Remember novels are fiction, January?”
Say what? “Um, yeh, I get that, but I like to think that these things have some truth to them. No one just makes this stuff up, do they?”
Well, not ALL of it, right?
Yes, I am a sucker for romance. I actually think the letters left in a daughter’s backpack by a smitten boy are kind of cute. Am I really the only one who misses the check “yes” or “no” letters of our childhoods? And, it does’t matter how many times I watch a movie like The Notebook…it still makes me cry. I would also place bets on the number of people who would cherish a little romance in the midst of this electronic age, in the midst of the frenzied to-do lists that have become our everyday lives.
Romance that brings a person to tears.
The kind of heartbreak, chaos, and consuming love that only exists in novels or on the silver screen.
The kind of love that is unconditional.
The kind of love we receive from God.
You are precious to me. You are honored and I love you. Isaiah 43:4
We all have a love letter written especially for us. Words so eloquently spoken. Those professing an undying love for each one of us. We don’t have to long for these words to be spoken. We don’t have to long for the day when someone will tell us we are beautiful, that we are always in their thoughts, that we are loved beyond measure. We have already been told these things.
God’s love letter tells us we are treasured. You will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth. Exodus 19:5
God’s love letter lets us know we are beautiful. You are altogether beautiful, my love. There is no flaw in you. Song of Songs 4:7
God’s love letter says we are valuable and precious. You are more valuable than a whole flock of sparrows. Matthew 10:31
His love letter tells us He will always encourage us. I will comfort and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say. 2 Thessalonians 2:17
He demonstrates in his love letter that he is willing to give up life for you. He did not spare even His own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? Romans 8:32
…and His is an undying love. Unconditional. All consuming. Never ceasing. I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself. Jeremiah 31:3
Sappy romance novels and movies will likely be a guilty pleasure of mine for years to come. And, let’s face it…I will read each book, and watch each movie with the longing of a love-starved teen, and wielding a handful of tissues. But, when the last page is turned, when the credits have started to roll, I can be reassured that I have a far greater love than any Hollywood movie producer could recreate. I have a love letter in my possession that cannot compare to anything a novelist could pen. This love letter is written just for me. Just for you. It’s not a simple work of fiction, or some unattainable ideal. It’s real, just waiting for you to pick it up and read it.
It’s the Bible. God’s love letter to you, and to me.
So grab your tissues. Open it up, and get swept away in a sappy love story that was written all about you!
